Online Learning: How Can Teachers Keep Students Engaged?

Since we’ve adopted social distancing practices, the entire mode of learning from school has switched to virtual learning. Meanwhile, educational institutions, teachers, and students have been trying to adjust to this transition.

Most students and teachers are struggling to keep their focus on the computer screen for long hours. Students’ engagement levels have drastically reduced, and their attention span has decreased at large.

Considering all the consequences of online learning, educators have to come up with a better and more effective approach to keep students engaged during long hours of the session. Here are some of the techniques that might work for you:

Use Live Media

Just reading out the presentation to the students won’t capture their interest, however, if you add trailers, sounds, polls, animations, or any other form of creative media along with the text, it’ll make your lessons more interesting.

Encourage Students to Speak Up

Although it’s suggested to keep mics off during online sessions because of less disturbance via noise. However, this shouldn’t stop the students from interacting in the class or expressing their opinion.

Teachers should instruct students to actively use the chatbox or make use of the hand raise feature so the teacher can unmute that student.

Even those students who are naturally shy to speak up can confidently list down their questions or opinions in the chat. Teachers can make students a part of the lecture by voicing their opinions out loud during the lecture.

This keeps the students alert and also ensures that they’re not only passive listeners.

Allow Breakout Sessions

If a lecture is longer than an hour, students will automatically feel sleepy or lousy. To make sure they stay attentive throughout the session, allow them to have a breakout session between lectures.

A breakout session is kind of a workshop session where people take active participation and exchange their opinions in a rather comfortable and private space.

However, the teachers need to ensure whether the students are benefiting from it or only taking a break.

Involve Games

Since you’re already using technology, why not make better use of it? Search for online learning games that can develop students’ interest in the lecture.
